HIASFEST is designed for teen artists in secondary schools. Some categories are open to all ages, particularly the indigenous languages category.
HIASFEST is a 4-day festival minus arrival. Students can attend independently with parental support if their school is not participating.
There are scholarship schemes, special awards, national literary prizes, and cash prizes for winning schools. The first position takes N1m for a grand science project.

There are eleven major categories: Poetry Writing, Non-Fiction Writing, Short Story Writing, Painting, Spoken Word, Contemporary Song, Cultural Dance, Quiz, Innovation, ICT/Technology, and Drama.
